Hands on with the Canon EF 1200 f/5.6L Lens

Posted by Juan Pons

When we heard that the fine folks at LensCoat had their hands on what has to be one of the rarest lenses in the world, we knew we had get over there and shoot some footage! As we were in the area, we quickly mobilized and teamed up with Outdoor Photo Gear to create a hands-on review of this incredible lens. We were able to spend a few precious hours evaluating the 1200 by shooting stills as well as video, with (what else but) a Canon 5D MarkII.

Make sure to watch this video to learn a bit about some of the unique features of the 1200. You’ll see some sample stills and video footage, both of the lens and through the lens (even with a 2X teleconverter!).

After spending a few hours with this incredible piece of glass, we can tell you that this is one big and one heavy lens. The 1200 weighs in at 36.4 lbs, measures 32.9 inches, that’s just over 2 1/2 feet long! The price you ask? A measly $120,000. No typo there, yes, one hundred and twenty thousand dollars! Good news is that all that money gets you a lens that produces stellar images.

Who owns and uses a lens like this? Well, this specific unit is rumored to have been previously owned by “some government agency.” By the way, if you are one of the lucky few to own this lens, you can purchase a LensCoat for it at Outdoor Photo Gear.

This video review was created for Outdoor Photo Gear by Juan A. Pons at WildNaturePhoto.com

All footage shot with a Canon 5D MarkII, and Canon EF 24-105 f4 L, Canon EF 17-40 f4 L and Canon EF 70-200 f4 L lenses.

Thanks to the fine folks at LensCoat and the used equipment department at B&H Photo for letting us get our hands on this monster.
